A squad can be painted to a high standard and still look as though it has marched straight from the same production line. Miniature conversion bits are the quickest way to break that repetition. A new helmet, bionic arm, weapon set, backpack, shoulder plate or trophy rack can turn a familiar body into a veteran, a faction champion, a battlefield scavenger or the centrepiece of a whole force.
For most hobbyists, the appeal is not simply owning a more unusual model. Conversion work lets your army tell a story at unit level. The disciplined line infantry have matching kit. The command cadre carry ornate relic weapons. The survivors of a brutal campaign wear replacement limbs and mismatched armour. Those visual decisions make a force feel deliberate before it has rolled a single dice.
What miniature conversion bits actually do
Conversion bits are individual components designed to replace, supplement or alter parts on an existing miniature. They range from practical weapon swaps and alternate heads to extensive bionics, armour upgrades, shields, cloaks, scenic packs and faction-specific accessories. Some are made for a particular kit or scale; others are intended as flexible building material for experienced modellers.
The best conversion is usually not the one with the most extra parts. It is the one that gives a model a clearer role. A heavy weapon operator needs an ammunition feed, braced stance or reinforced limb that makes the weapon believable. A psyker, inquisitor or warlord benefits from a silhouette that reads at distance: an elevated collar, staff, familiar, elaborate backpack or recognisable relic.
That is why a single head swap can have more impact than covering every surface in equipment. Faces, helmets, hands and weapons sit where the eye naturally lands. Begin there, then add secondary details only if they support the same idea.
Start with a unit story, not a pile of parts
It is tempting to spread every interesting bit across a squad. The result can become visually noisy, particularly once the models are painted. Instead, decide what the unit is before cutting anything free from the supports.
Perhaps they are void-boarders, ash-waste raiders, temple guards, corrupted veterans or heavily augmented shock troops. Write the idea in one sentence. Then choose two or three visual cues that repeat across the unit. Void-boarders might share enclosed helmets, cable bundles and compact weapons. Augmented troops might use bionic arms, exposed pistons and practical replacement legs.
Repetition is what turns individually converted miniatures into a coherent force. Variation is still valuable, but it should happen within a shared visual language. Use three different helmet designs rather than seven unrelated ones. Give one squad leader a more elaborate version of the same armour plate used by the rest of the unit.
This approach also helps with painting. Shared elements can receive the same accent colour, weathering treatment or glow effect. A force with mixed sources starts to look unified when its recurring conversion details are painted consistently.
Choosing bits that fit the job
Compatibility is more than whether a component physically attaches. Scale, proportion, pose and style all matter. A heroic-scale head may fit a torso socket but look oversized beside slender legs. A realistic rifle can seem too small in a heavily armoured hand. A beautifully sculpted shoulder pad may not work if its trim language clashes with the rest of the model.
Check the intended scale and any stated compatibility notes first. Then compare the component against the original part before committing. Blu tack or a small amount of temporary putty is useful here. Test the head at several angles, hold the weapon against the hand, and view the miniature at arm's length. That is the distance from which most tabletop models are seen.
Pose deserves the same attention. A sword held high demands a body that appears to be lunging, commanding or defending. A replacement arm set with a different shoulder angle can make a static torso look unexpectedly awkward. If the pose fights the piece, consider changing the wrist angle, trimming the shoulder connection or choosing a different component. The cleanest conversion often comes from matching the bit to the existing pose rather than forcing it.

Preparing resin conversion bits cleanly
Resin rewards patience. Before assembly, inspect every part for its support contact points and any thin elements that need extra care. Use sharp sprue cutters or a hobby knife to remove larger support nubs gradually. Do not twist parts away from their supports, as this can stress a narrow wrist, cable or blade.
A wash in warm water with a little washing-up liquid helps remove residual release material and sanding dust. Allow the parts to dry fully before gluing. If an edge is uneven, sand it lightly. Wet sanding is preferable for resin because it keeps dust down; wear suitable respiratory protection and avoid creating airborne dust.
Dry-fit every contact point. Resin joins are not always identical to plastic kit sockets, and a tiny adjustment now prevents a gap later. For a clean join, flatten both mating surfaces where possible. A broad, flat connection is stronger and easier to align than a small rounded point.
Super glue is the usual choice for resin-to-resin and resin-to-plastic joints. Use a small amount: excess adhesive can obscure sculpted detail and create a glossy ridge that paint will reveal. For larger or weight-bearing parts, pinning with a short length of wire adds real strength. It takes longer, but it is worthwhile for wings, large weapons, heavy backpacks and extended arms likely to catch on foam trays or terrain.
Make the join look intentional
The difference between a swap and a convincing conversion is usually the transition. If a bionic arm ends at an armoured sleeve, the connection should look engineered rather than merely glued on. A thin ring of modelling putty can create a cuff, cable collar, cloth fold or reinforced joint. Texture it with the edge of a tool before it cures to match the surrounding material.
Gaps do not always need filling with smooth putty. On a battle-worn model, a gap can become a damaged plate, an exposed mechanism or a welded repair. This is particularly effective with industrial sci-fi, ork-style salvage builds and corrupted armour. The key is consistency: make the repair look like a design choice repeated elsewhere on the miniature.
Consider the model from every side. A conversion can look excellent from the front yet expose an empty shoulder socket, a floating cable or a visible joint at the rear. Rotate it under a desk lamp before priming. Strong light makes gaps and misalignments obvious while they are still easy to fix.
Keep gameplay in view
A converted miniature still needs to work at the table. If it represents a specific weapon or unit option, make that equipment clear enough that an opponent can identify it without a lengthy explanation. The closer the conversion is to a recognisable battlefield role, the smoother games tend to be.
This matters most at organised events, where basing requirements, silhouette, equipment representation and model dimensions may be more strictly interpreted. A dramatic banner, scenic base or extended spear can be wonderful for a display model, but may create transport problems or change the model's footprint. It depends on the event pack and the expectations of your local group, so check before building an entire squad around a non-standard idea.
There is also a practical balance between visual drama and durability. Delicate antennae, floating chains and outward-pointing blades create memorable silhouettes, but they are vulnerable. For a miniature that travels every week, choose sturdy attachment points and keep the most fragile showpiece details for characters, display bases or models with dedicated storage.
Painting conversions so they belong
Primer is the first real test of a conversion. A single, even coat removes the distraction of mixed materials and shows whether the design reads as one miniature. If the added part suddenly looks too large or too busy, it is still possible to simplify it before committing to a full paint job.
Paint new components using the same shadows and highlight placement as the host model, but give important conversion details their own material treatment. A bionic limb benefits from distinct metal tones, oil staining or controlled edge wear. A relic weapon can carry a contrasting glow colour. A replacement armour plate might be a slightly different shade to suggest field repair, while sharing the squad's main trim colour to retain cohesion.
For larger forces, reserve the most elaborate miniature conversion bits for leaders and specialists. A regular squad can carry one repeated upgrade, while characters receive the ornate crests, trophies and layered bionics. This creates a natural hierarchy across the army and keeps every model from competing for attention.
The most satisfying conversions are not necessarily the most complicated. Choose a role, test the fit, make the join believable, and paint the new detail as part of the same history. One well-placed bionic hand or weathered weapon can say more about a miniature's campaign than a full box of unused parts.
