A superb resin sculpt can lose its presence in a moment: a shoulder pad glued half a millimetre high, a sword hand set at the wrong angle, or a scenic base that leaves the model leaning like it has survived a particularly bad drop pod landing. This resin miniature assembly guide is built for the moments between opening the parcel and laying down primer, when careful preparation turns a collection of detailed parts into a miniature that looks deliberate from every angle.
Resin rewards patience. It captures sharper texture and finer details than many hobby materials, but those details deserve a measured approach. Work cleanly, test everything before committing, and treat tiny connection points as part of the model rather than disposable packaging.
Set up your resin miniature assembly station
Choose a well-lit, ventilated work surface and cover it with a cutting mat or a sheet of card. Keep food and drink away from the bench. Although fully cured printed resin is stable for normal hobby handling, sanding or filing can create fine dust, so wear a well-fitting mask and clean the area afterwards. Eye protection is sensible when clipping supports or trimming brittle pieces.
You do not need a heroic armoury of specialist tools. A sharp hobby knife, flush cutters, fine files or sanding sticks, superglue, tweezers, a pin vice, paper towels and a small bowl are enough for most kits. Have a gap-filling cyanoacrylate glue or two-part epoxy putty available for larger joins. Thin plastic cement is not suitable: it works by melting polystyrene, while resin does not respond in the same way.
For delicate characters, cavalry, battle mechs and large centrepiece models, add brass rod or sturdy paper clips for pinning. A few minutes spent reinforcing a heavy arm, wing or weapon can prevent an avoidable repair after painting.
Wash before you build
A proper wash is the first practical step in any resin miniature assembly guide. Small traces of production residue can interfere with primer and glue, particularly in recesses or across broad, smooth panels. Place the parts in lukewarm water with a small amount of washing-up liquid, then gently scrub them with a soft toothbrush.
Avoid very hot water at this stage. Heat can soften thinner sections, which is useful when correcting a bend but unhelpful when you simply want to clean a spear, banner or rifle barrel. Rinse the parts thoroughly and leave them to dry completely on paper towel before assembly. Glue applied to damp resin is rarely as reliable as it should be.
As the parts dry, inspect each one. Look for small support nubs, particularly beneath cloaks, between fingers, along weapon edges and on the undersides of scenic components. The goal is not to remove material aggressively. Use flush cutters to take away the bulk of a support, then pare the remaining nub down with a sharp blade in controlled, shallow passes. Finish with a fine sanding stick only where needed.
Plan the pose before using glue
Dry-fitting is where a multipart miniature becomes a model rather than a puzzle. Lay every component out by subassembly: torso and legs, arms and weapons, head, backpack, base, and any separate scenic elements. Compare repeated shapes carefully. Mirrored arms, layered shoulder plates and similarly sized cables are easy to confuse when a kit is spread across the bench.
Test the main joints without glue and view the miniature from the front, side and rear. This matters most with two-handed weapons, aiming poses, shields, flowing cloaks and anything with a wide silhouette. A hand can meet a weapon grip perfectly while the elbow sits too far forward, changing the whole posture.
If a joint feels vague, use the surrounding details as alignment markers. Armour seams, straps, robe folds and mechanical cabling often reveal the intended angle more clearly than the contact surface itself. On multi-part terrain or large monsters, assemble in stages rather than trying to solve every connection at once.
For kits with options, decide now whether the model is headed for the gaming table, a display shelf or a particular army theme. A dramatic conversion may need a stronger pin, while a model intended for regular transport benefits from a lower, more compact profile. Glue resin cleanly and securely
Use a small amount of superglue on one side of the join. More glue does not make a stronger bond - it usually creates a glossy ridge that obscures detail and takes longer to cure. Press the parts together, hold them firmly for several seconds, then set the miniature down only after the join can support itself.
A medium-viscosity superglue is a dependable all-round choice. Thin glue runs into tight joins quickly, but can travel across textured surfaces or into fingers. Gel glue gives more working time and helps with uneven contact points, though it can leave a larger bead. For a broad or slightly imperfect join, a gap-filling adhesive is often the better option.
Pin heavy or load-bearing parts. Drill a shallow hole into both contact surfaces, test-fit a short length of brass rod, then glue the rod into one side before joining the parts. Wings, oversized resin weapons, tall banners, flight stands and large scenic bases are the obvious candidates. Pinning is not mandatory for every arm and accessory, but it is cheap insurance where the joint will receive stress during play or transport.
Keep a spare clean brush, cocktail stick or scrap of card nearby to remove excess glue before it cures. If you accidentally fog a smooth area with superglue, let it fully harden before carefully sanding it back. Trying to wipe wet glue usually spreads the problem.
When a join will not sit flush
Do not force the parts together. First check for an overlooked support nub or a tiny lip of resin inside the socket. Remove the obstruction gradually and dry-fit again. If the gap remains, a small amount of two-part epoxy putty can rebuild the transition after the structural glue has cured.
Smooth the putty with a damp sculpting tool and follow the direction of nearby fabric, fur or armour texture. On mechanical models, a clean seam is often preferable to an overworked repair. Let the design dictate the solution.
Correct bends without snapping thin parts
Long, slender resin elements can occasionally arrive slightly bent. This is normal for finely printed spears, blades, antennae and banner poles, and it is usually straightforward to correct. Warm the affected section in hot, not boiling, water for a few seconds. Once it becomes slightly flexible, ease it into position and hold it under cool water to set the shape.
Work slowly. Repeatedly bending a tiny part back and forth increases the chance of a break. If a very fine spear or sword does snap, pinning may be impractical; a tiny amount of superglue, followed by careful reinforcement with paint and varnish, can still produce a durable tabletop result. For a display piece, replacing the shaft with brass rod may be the cleaner repair.
Build in subassemblies when paint access matters
Not every miniature should be fully assembled before priming. A cape pressed against a backpack, a rifle crossing the chest, or a rider seated deep in a cockpit can hide areas that will be awkward to paint later. Leave those pieces separate when they have clear connection points and can be attached cleanly after painting.
There is a trade-off. Too many subassemblies create handling problems and make it harder to judge how colours work together. Keep separate only the parts that genuinely block access or demand a different painting approach. Heads, shields, large weapons and riders are common examples; a tiny pouch usually is not.
Mount loose pieces on temporary holders with a small spot of adhesive putty or a pin. Label them if you are working through a full squad, especially where several near-identical weapon arms are involved. Nothing slows a painting session like trying to identify which left hand belongs to which plasma carbine after the primer is on.
Finish the base and inspect under primer
Before priming, attach the model to its base or decide how it will be pinned to a scenic base. Check that both feet sit naturally and that the miniature has a stable centre of gravity. If one foot is raised, a pin through the foot and into the base is often stronger and neater than relying on glue alone.
Prime in thin, controlled coats. Primer is the final inspection stage: it reveals sanding scratches, faint support marks, glue shine and seams that were invisible on bare resin. Correct only what will be visible at normal viewing distance. Chasing every microscopic imperfection can consume an evening better spent painting the model.
A clean build does not mean a sterile one. A scarred cloak edge, a deliberately tilted helm or a slightly weathered base can give a miniature more character than a flawless but lifeless finish. Take the time to make the joins strong and the pose convincing, then let the brushwork give your finished warrior, monster or machine its place on the battlefield.
