Resin Versus Plastic Miniatures Compared

A character’s face hidden beneath a rebreather, tiny cabling on a battle mech’s knee, a weathered shrine door that needs to read from across the table - these are the details that make the resin versus plastic miniatures question worth asking. Material changes more than the feel of a model in your hand. It affects how cleanly it paints, how safely it travels, how much preparation it needs and whether it is the right foundation for the force or encounter you are building.

Neither material wins every campaign. The better choice depends on whether you want a rank-and-file army that can absorb a busy gaming calendar, a centrepiece that rewards close inspection, or a niche unit that only exists because an independent studio had the freedom to sculpt it.

Resin versus plastic miniatures: the real differences

At a glance, resin and plastic can both produce excellent gaming pieces. Their strengths come from how they are made. Traditional plastic miniature kits are usually injection moulded at high volume. This makes them efficient for large production runs and allows manufacturers to create multipart sprues with predictable fittings.

Resin miniatures are cast in moulds or produced through resin 3D printing. For collectors and hobbyists, the most obvious result is often sharper surface texture. Fine cloth folds, hair, runes, organic armour and layered mechanical components can remain crisply defined, especially on character models and detailed terrain.

However, “plastic” is not one single material. Hard polystyrene, the familiar material used in many multipart model kits, behaves very differently from softer PVC commonly found in board-game figures. A hard plastic kit generally cuts, sands and converts well. Softer plastic can be more forgiving when dropped, but may have softer details, bent weapons or more stubborn mould lines. Comparing a premium hard-plastic kit to a detailed resin print is a more useful exercise than treating all plastic miniatures alike.

Detail and sculpting freedom

Resin is often the natural home for elaborate sculpts. It can capture undercuts and complex forms that would be awkward, expensive or impossible to release on a conventional injection-moulded sprue. That matters when building an army with a strong identity: alien cult champions, strange biomechanical walkers, cursed knight orders or a dungeon party where every adventurer needs a distinct silhouette.

3D-printed resin also gives licensed independent studios room to make focused ranges rather than only broad, mass-market factions. You can find the exact assassin, war priest, battle mech or terrain element needed to support a theme, rather than settling for the nearest generic equivalent.

Plastic still deserves credit here. Well-designed plastic kits can be exceptionally detailed, and multipart construction provides a kind of sculpting freedom of its own. Separate heads, weapons, arms and accessories make it easier to create variation across a squad. If your plan is to build thirty infantry with different poses, plastic kits can offer excellent value and flexibility.

Durability at the gaming table

Plastic is usually the safer choice for miniatures that will be handled constantly, packed into a case every week and exposed to the occasional knocked table. It has a little more give than resin, particularly in narrow parts such as rifle barrels, antennae and banner poles. A plastic model may bend or scuff where a resin equivalent could snap.

That does not mean resin belongs only in a display cabinet. Properly prepared resin miniatures are perfectly capable gaming pieces, and many players field them every weekend. The practical difference is that resin rewards sensible handling. Store models with room around projecting parts, protect them during transport, and lift them by the base rather than a wing, weapon or scenic element.

A large, heavy resin model also needs a suitably stable base. Pinning can be worthwhile where a substantial body joins a narrow ankle, flight stand or scenic rock. For tall centrepieces and battle mechs, that little bit of reinforcement can prevent a frustrating repair later.

Assembly, preparation and conversions

Plastic is generally more familiar to newer hobbyists. Parts are removed from sprues, mould lines are cleaned, and plastic cement creates a strong welded bond on polystyrene. Assembly is often guided by a numbered instruction booklet, especially with major kit manufacturers.

Resin needs a different approach. Resin parts are normally bonded with superglue rather than plastic cement. Before assembly, inspect every part under good light. Remove any small support contacts left by 3D printing with clippers or a hobby knife, then gently smooth the area with fine abrasive paper where necessary. Dry-fit first, particularly on multipart figures with cloaks, weapons or separate scenic bases.

Some cast resin miniatures may retain a trace of mould-release agent. A gentle wash in warm, soapy water and a full air-dry before priming is good practice. For 3D-printed resin, reputable producers complete washing and curing before dispatch, but it is still sensible to check the model for any residue or rough support marks before you begin.

Use a mask when sanding resin, work in a ventilated area, and wet-sand where practical to keep dust down. The job is not difficult, but it is a material-specific habit worth learning.

For conversions, hard plastic remains wonderfully accommodating. It is easy to cut, drill and splice with spare components. Resin can also be converted, but it is more brittle and less forgiving of force. Small adjustments are straightforward; extensive reposing calls for a careful hand, pins and a clear plan. If your project revolves around heavy kitbashing, a plastic core with resin heads, weapons, bionics or armour pieces often gives you the best of both materials.

Painting resin and plastic

Both materials take paint beautifully once they are properly primed. The key is not to assume resin requires a different painting style. Your familiar primer, acrylic paints, washes and varnishes will work as intended.

Resin’s fine detail can make techniques such as drybrushing, edge highlighting and oil washes especially satisfying. Texture catches pigment cleanly, so stonework, fur, chainmail and engraved armour can gain depth quickly. The flip side is that every detail is visible. A missed support mark, a glossy patch of residue or an overly thick primer coat can be more noticeable on a highly rendered sculpt.

Plastic miniatures are no less paintable, but their construction sometimes introduces gaps at shoulders, torsos or weapon joins. Filling these before priming makes a major difference. Resin models can have joins too, particularly on larger kits, so inspect both materials as part of normal preparation rather than assuming one arrives ready for paint.

For gaming models, a durable varnish is a sensible final layer regardless of material. It helps protect raised edges, weapon grips and areas that are repeatedly touched during play.

Cost, availability and what you are actually buying

Plastic often has the advantage when you need large numbers of broadly useful troops. Injection moulding becomes economical at scale, so mass-market unit boxes can be an efficient route to filling out a battleline.

Resin usually costs more per miniature, especially when the model is large, heavily detailed or produced in smaller batches. Yet price per figure is only part of the calculation. A distinctive resin squad leader may do more for an army’s narrative than another ten nearly identical bodies. A single dramatic dungeon boss can anchor a whole RPG arc. Custom terrain pieces can turn a functional board into a location players remember.

Availability is also different. A made-to-order resin range can offer deeper, more specialised choices, but it may require a production window before dispatch. That is not the same experience as taking a box from a shop shelf. Which material should you choose?

Choose resin when sculpt detail, uncommon themes, characterful poses and specialist ranges matter more than quick assembly. It is ideal for heroes, monsters, commanders, distinctive squads, conversion elements and terrain that needs to hold attention at close range.

Many of the best collections use both. Plastic forms the dependable backbone; resin provides the cult leader, the relic-bearing knight, the strange war engine and the objective marker that gives the army its voice. Start with the material that suits the role a miniature must play, then give it the preparation and protection it deserves. The result is not just a better model - it is a table with a story worth gathering around.
