Choosing Mech Miniatures for Your Battleforce

A good mech does more than occupy a base. It tells your opponent what kind of war is about to begin. A broad-shouldered siege engine suggests armour-plated attrition; a lean, reverse-jointed hunter promises speed; an ancient walker covered in cabling and repair plates feels like it has survived several campaigns too many. That is the appeal of mech miniatures: they bring the force, personality and visual storytelling of a whole army into a single imposing model.

For painters, collectors and commanders, the best choice is rarely just the largest chassis or the loudest weapon. Scale, silhouette, pose, resin preparation and battlefield role all matter. Get those decisions right early and a mech force looks coherent on the table, even when every pilot, machine and battlefield has its own history.

Start with the battlefield role

Before choosing a design, decide what you want the machine to do in your collection or game. A centrepiece command walker needs a different presence from a squadron of workhorse battle mechs. The former can carry an elaborate heraldic scheme, dramatic base and a weapon loadout that reads clearly from across the table. The latter need repeated visual cues that make them look like a fighting formation rather than a shelf of unrelated robots.

Heavy assault mechs usually benefit from large, stable feet, thick leg armour and weapons mounted close to the torso or shoulders. Their silhouette should feel planted. Fast skirmishers can be narrower, more upright or posed mid-stride, with exposed pistons and swept armour panels that imply motion. Fire-support platforms often read best with long barrels, missile housings or elevated sensor arrays, while reconnaissance machines gain character from antennae, spotter drones and lighter limb construction.

Rules may determine a model’s role in some systems, but visual clarity still serves the game. If your force has three similar-sized machines, give each one a distinct function that can be recognised at a glance. A commander might have a banner aerial and reinforced shoulder plate; a close-range bruiser might carry a broad blade or breaching weapon; a scout can be identified by its slimmer frame and sensor gear. That approach is useful even in game-agnostic collections.

Choose mech miniatures by silhouette, not details alone

Fine detail sells a resin model up close, but silhouette is what makes it memorable at arm’s length. A brilliant sculpt can become visually muddy if every surface carries the same density of armour plates, cables, skulls, vents and weaponry. Look for a hierarchy: large forms first, secondary armour and weapon shapes next, then the small engineering details that reward a closer look.

The strongest mech miniatures generally have a clear focal point. It may be a distinctive cockpit, a huge shoulder cannon, a knightly head crest or a brutal industrial claw. Once you have that focal point, the rest of the design should support it rather than compete with it. This makes painting easier too, because your colour choices can lead the eye where the sculpt already wants it to go.

There is a trade-off between a clean, military profile and a baroque war machine loaded with relics, chains and trophies. Neither is inherently better. A streamlined hard-sci-fi force can look clinical and disciplined, while a more ornate force carries the weight of a grim, inherited war. The key is consistency. Mixing both styles can work, but it needs a narrative reason: perhaps ancient command machines lead newly manufactured line units, or a salvaged lance has been rebuilt from several lost factions.

Scale is more than base size

Check the stated scale and base dimensions before building a force. A mech intended as a towering centrepiece may look wrong beside models designed for a smaller battlefield scale, even if both are described as “28 mm” or “32 mm”. Overall height matters, but so do bulk, stance and the visual size of the cockpit, weapons and hands.

If you are selecting miniatures for a specific ruleset, use the game’s official base and height guidance where applicable. For display pieces, you have more freedom, but consider the scene around the model. A titanically scaled walker needs terrain, infantry or wreckage that gives the viewer a sense of its size. Without those references, even an enormous machine can look oddly weightless.

Build a force that looks like it belongs together

A mech lance becomes far more convincing when its shared identity appears in the repeated details. You do not need identical sculpts or matching poses. In fact, too much repetition can make a force feel factory-fresh and static. Instead, establish two or three elements that recur across every machine: a common armour colour, a warning-stripe placement, a specific sensor glow, a unit insignia or a shared style of weathering.

The same principle applies when using miniatures from different ranges. Select machines with compatible proportions and design language, then unite them with bases and paint. A collection that includes angular military walkers, industrial exosuits and ancient relic-mechs can still look intentional if they all fight across the same rusted manufactorum floor or ash-choked wasteland.

A few carefully chosen additions are often more effective than rebuilding every model. Swapping a weapon, adding a bionic arm or mounting a trophy plate can turn a standard chassis into a veteran with a story.

Use conversions with restraint

Conversion bits are powerful because they create ownership. A weapon swap can distinguish two otherwise similar models. An alternate head can establish rank. Battle damage can tell the story of a machine that survived a catastrophic hit. But every addition should preserve the mech’s centre of gravity and its readable silhouette.

Avoid placing oversized guns on thin joints unless you are deliberately aiming for an improvised scrapyard aesthetic. Similarly, asymmetry is dramatic when it has a purpose: a shield arm, a salvaged replacement limb or a shoulder-mounted weapon system all imply function. Random asymmetry simply makes a sculpt look unfinished.

Prepare resin carefully before paint

Premium resin captures crisp panel lines, armour seams and mechanical texture, but it rewards patient preparation. Inspect each part under strong light before assembly. Remove any remaining support nubs with a sharp hobby knife or fine cutters, then smooth the contact point gently. Take care around antennae, blades, cables and thin weapon barrels, where aggressive trimming can remove more detail than intended.

Wash the components in warm, mildly soapy water, rinse them thoroughly and allow them to dry fully. This helps remove any residual release agent and gives primer the clean surface it needs. Dry-fit larger pieces before reaching for adhesive. Mech kits often have large armour sections that conceal joints, and a few minutes spent checking angles can prevent a lopsided stance later.

For heavier parts, pinning is worth considering, particularly at ankles, hips, waist joints and large weapon mounts. It takes longer than a simple glue joint, but a well-pinned mech handles transport and gaming wear far better. Choose your pose before final assembly. Both feet should look as though they are carrying real weight, whether the machine is standing firm, stepping onto debris or bracing to fire.

Paint materials, not just colours

Mechs are a brilliant excuse to paint different materials on one miniature. Armour should not look exactly like pistons; heat-stained exhausts should not look exactly like a cockpit canopy. The secret is controlled contrast rather than adding every effect available.

Start with a clear armour recipe. Mid-tone panels, darker recesses and selective edge highlights give the chassis definition. Use a second metal tone for joints and hydraulics so the structure remains readable beneath the plates. Then choose one or two spot colours for lenses, reactor vents, plasma coils or targeting optics. Too many glowing elements reduce the impact of each one.

Weathering should follow the model’s imagined use. Desert walkers collect dust around their feet and lower legs. Urban machines may show soot, chipped paint and rain marks. A reactor-heavy machine can carry heat discolouration around vents and barrels. Apply damage where a real machine would meet danger: leading edges, knee plates, hands, weapon housings and access hatches. Random sponge chipping over every panel can flatten a carefully painted scheme.

Let the base carry the story

A base is where weight becomes believable. Even a simple textured surface benefits from a deliberate choice of environment: broken ferrocrete, factory plating, alien stone, snow, mud or blasted earth. Match the base across the force, then vary individual details with spent casings, wreckage, pipes or battlefield debris.

Be mindful of height. A scenic base can make a mech look more dramatic, but excessive rubble may alter the model’s practical footprint or create awkward overhangs during games. The best bases frame the model without becoming a second centrepiece. A raised foot on a shattered wall segment, for example, creates movement while keeping the machine stable and usable.

Your finished mech does not need to be pristine, perfectly symmetrical or covered in every available detail. It needs a clear role, a convincing stance and enough history to make someone ask what battle put that scar across its armour.
